In the Middle Ages, England was not a very safe place to live if you were of Royal birth, or Nobility
The Kings, and Nobles were always fighting for supremacy
Bloody, and traitorous acts were the order of the day
To keep power, and the populace in general under strict control, the Kings would issue
some very weird, and wonderful laws
One of these laws was
Ye Laywe of Flyrteng
(The Law of Flirting)
This law was made by the King in 1339, and stated that any man caught flirting
with a member of the opposite sex was to be executed
I will not go into the gory details, but it was rather a painful way to die, and involved rats
being made to gnaw through the man's stomach
In certain cases the woman was also executed by being buried alive
A rather stuffy death
This law did not apply to Royalty, or those of Noble birth
It also made no mention of a man flirting with another man
In 1340 the law was changed to apply only to single men
It was deemed unfair to married men as it is well known that
Married men do not flirt
